Consequences of Attending Less Than Half Time
- You will not be eligible for loan disbursements.
- The grace period of your subsidized loans will begin. You will be responsible for loan payment at the end of any grace period and should contact your lender to make payment arrangements or request a loan deferment or forbearance.
- You are responsible for Unsubsidized and PLUS loan payment and should contact your lender to make payment arrangements or request a loan deferment or forbearance.
- If you do not make payments, you will default on your loan and be ineligible for any future federal aid.
Additional Consequences of Withdrawing from all Classes
If you withdraw from all classes during a semester, you may be required to repay a portion of your financial aid. You must repay your loans even if you do not complete your program.
The WSU Financial Aid Office is required by regulation to calculate a Return of Title IV Funds and Refund amount for all financial aid recipients who withdraw, or do not attend classes during a semester. When the Financial Aid Office receives official notice of your withdrawal, we will recalculate your financial aid eligibility based on the date of withdrawal. The Financial Aid Office will determine the amount of aid you are entitled to keep (if any) and the amount of funds that must be returned to the University, the State, Title IV programs and your lender.
Contacts for Direct Loan Information
If you have questions about your eligibility, the amount you can borrow or disbursements, contact the Law School Office of Student Financial Aid.
If you want to learn more about the Direct Loan Program, or have questions about your rights, responsibilities or loan terms and conditions, you may go to the Direct Loan Web site at www.direct.ed.gov.
Once your loan has been disbursed, you may contact the Direct Loan Servicing Center for help, especially if you are having trouble repaying or you need to report a change of address or a name change: 1-800-848-0979 or (TTY) 1-800-848-0983.
Direct Loan Servicing Online: www.dl.ed.gov. You can use this Web site to look up your account information, change your address, request a deferment, learn about making online payments or set up automatic payments, change your billing options, etc.
Direct Loans also are reported to the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS), accessible at www.nslds.ed.gov, which maintains your overall financial aid history for federal student aid.
School Contact Information
Use www.pipeline.wayne.edu to withdraw from a course or contact the WSU Law School Records Office. The Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA) strongly encourages you to discuss with a Financial Aid Administrator the effect withdrawing from all classes will have on your financial aid. After officially withdrawing from all classes, you must immediately notify OSFA of your enrollment status change to complete exit-counseling requirements.

Loan Repayment Reminders
Consult with your lender(s) regarding repayment programs and options before the end of your grace period.
- Federal Stafford Loan repayment begins six months after your last date of half-time attendance.
- Federal Perkins Loan repayment begins nine months after your last date of attendance.
- Federal GradPLUS Loan repayment begins immediately, however your lender may grant a forbearance if requested.
- Additional deferment or forbearance periods may be possible if you are not able to begin repayment on your loans after the grace period has expired. If you decide to request additional deferments or forbearances, you must contact your lender. You must also make payments until the requested deferments or forbearances are approved.
The WSU Office of Student Financial Aid is available if you have questions regarding your student loans. Additionally, the Federal Student Aid Ombudsman of the Department of Education, www.ombudsman.ed.gov, may help resolve disputes and solve other problems with federal student loans.
Federal Perkins loan recipients must complete separate required Federal Perkins Loan Entrance and Exit Counseling. You may contact the WSU Student Accounts Receivable Office (313-577-3656) for information or use the links above to complete online counseling requirements.
